Hand Woven Sheepskin Rug

This unique, voluminous rug is made from fluffy, natural sheep's wool, which has been brushed to enchance its original texture, woven into long, thin strips of white leather.
Designed by David, who is studying at HOHEPA (a community for the intellectually disabled), it is made using a technique called Saori-weaving, in which various materials are woven together by hand. Yasmin, a staff member at HOHEPA, learned about Saori-weaving when she visited Japan, and is now teaching the technique to students at HOHEPA. The sheep's wool and leather used for the rugs are donated by local farmers. As David can only weave a rug when enough materials have been donated, the size and length of each rug varies and the production timing is also irregular. David’s rugs are so popular among the local community that they sell out as soon as they appear on the shelves of HOHEPA's shop.

Today, the school has four locations throughout New Zealand, offering education based on both the Rudolf Steiner and New Zealand Curricula. HOHEPA is inspired by the teachings of Dr. Rudolf Steiner, the renowned philosopher, scientist, and educator.
